St. Michael – He Has Our Back
theophilus September 29th, 2007
Today is the Feast of the Archangels – St. Michael, St. Gabriel & St. Raphael.
St. Michael is commemorated as the angel who led the victorious fight against Satan when he and his henchmen rebelled against God in heaven.
Today’s second reading, from Revelations 12, tells the story:
“War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.”
Now that is a great script for a Hollywood epic!
In all seriousness, we are in a battle . . . . . . one that has been going on since the serpent gave Eve the apple and Eve passed it on to Adam . . . it is a constant battle of good v. evil . . . right v. wrong . . . those who strive to lead a life according to Christ v. those who wish to tear us down. Satan, while cast out of heaven, still continues the fight . . . against God’s children . . . against us. It’s a spiritual fight for our families, our community, our nation, our church, our faith.
Are we up for the fight? Do we have our armor on? Are we armed for the battle? Have we engaged the enemy? Do we even recognize the enemy? Do we even know we’re in a fight? Do we have the will to win?
To win, it’s going to take unceasing prayer . . . listening to God . . . taking a stand for what is good and just . . . . making the right choices . . . doing the right things.
The following is the Prayer to St. Michael . . . it’s a good day to pray it . . . it’s nice knowing he has our back . . .
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
St.Michael is the patron saint of police officers, EMT’s and paratroopers . . . it’s a good day to also say a prayer for our community’s finest and our troops in the line of battle.
