Real Men Say the Rosary
April 3, 2008 |
Up until about a year-and-a-half ago, I never said the Rosary. In fact, I couldn’t have told you how to say the Rosary if Mary was in front of me trying to pray it with me. I just had no clue.
Then someone gave me a rosary and I decided to learn how to pray it. And I’ve prayed it off and on ever since. Unforunately, there are too many days when I get too busy and don’t find the time. So, for Lent, I resolved to pray it first thing in the morning and that seems to be working.
There are a great number of resources on the Net to help us pray the Rosary. Google “Rosary” and you’ll see what I mean. But, one thing I’ve noticed is that there really aren’t any resources to help the average guy pray the Rosary. So I began to think about how we could make the Rosary especially relevant to our lives.
To fill this need, I’ve developed Rosary Reflections for the Average Guy - a series of reflections that allow us to draw inspiration from the men of the Rosary mysteries. Hopefully, they will help guys like me pray the Rosary and have it connect our lives to the life of Christ and our mother.
In a similar vein, this morning I decided to devote each Hail Mary bead to someone in my life or in the world who is in need of some prayers. I didn’t have any problems filling each of the 50 beads with an intercession. Heck, throughout the rest of my time getting ready, I realized that there were folks who I left out. I think I spent the whole morning saying the Hail Mary for one person or another. I’ve never realized how many people in my life and our world are in need. At least once a week, we all may want to spend some time thinking of all of the people for whom we should pray and saying a Hail Mary for each of them. It’ll put everything in our lives in perspective and bring us closer to those in need and to Mary and her Son.
The Rosary is a wonderful prayer. When I say it right, I feel a sense of calm and security that I find no where else. I gain perspective and direction. I feel complete. I also keep my Rosary in my pocket. It’s hard to sin or feel anxiety when you feel those beads everytime you reach into your pocket. It’s hard not to do the right thing when Christ and Mary are an ever present part of your life.
Do not go through life without those life-giving beads!
